A beginner’s guide to buying decor on Instagram

Instagram is a fantastic platform for many many things. Staying up to date with your friends and family, showing off that perfectly-lit selfie, exploring hilarious videos of cute cats and, most importantly for us, diving deep into some home decor inspiration. But that’s not all it’s good for.

Did you know Instagram is also an amazing place for you to actually shop for that inspiration? That’s right; the place where selfies flow could actually become your new favourite online store. But if you’ve got no idea what we’re talking about, we’re here to teach you all about it with our quick read beginner’s guide to shopping for home decor.

1. Use hashtags

Hashtags aren’t just for you to use and draw in the ‘likes’, they’re also used by accounts and shops put their products and collections all in one place. One of our favourites is #inthewild as this will show real life layouts of furniture and decor in real life homes. From there you can discover actual seller accounts.

2. Turn to influencers

The term ‘influencer’ has become synonymous with people who have been on reality TV shows, but here we’re using the broader term that refers to bloggers and vloggers. These people have built up a strong and loyal following through their expertise in one particular area, and the one we’re interested in is ‘interior design’, of course. If you’re not sure where to begin when it comes to searching out seller accounts, take a scroll through the feed of an interior design influencer as they’ll very often tag shops in their posts and you can take it from there.

3. Take a closer look, or ask

Instagram has a handy new feature to help with shopping; all you have to do is tap the picture you’ve got your eye on and, if the poster has linked up correctly, the shop’s account will show up! If the seller hasn’t been tagged, don’t be afraid to drop a comment and find out.

4. Grab your auction paddle

Think of it as a more stylish eBay where you can find true one-of-a-kind home decor pieces. Many of these accounts adopt an auction-style of purchasing where they post the products directly onto their Instagram feed, people bid in their comments and whoever bids the highest and sends their money to the seller first wins the product. Even if you lose, these accounts upload regularly so be sure to check back on a daily basis.

5. Online discounts

Even if you can’t find Instagram shops that sell products directly, or if some of the pieces aren’t quite to your taste, retailers are known for posting exclusive discounts on their social media pages. This will still put you a step ahead as you can get pieces you love for far far less. So if you’ve got your eye on a particular piece for your home, why not bide your time and wait for a decent discount amount to come along? Trust us, you’ll feel even better knowing you nabbed it at a bargain price!
